The history of the basketball... A soccer ball transformed
Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the U.S. and worldwide, sharing the spotlight with soccer, baseball and American football. Over 300 million people play basketball around the globe, which is mind blowing when you consider it was only just invented a century ago. What's even crazier is the game, developed by Joe Naismith in 14 days at an original YMCA, was played with a soccer ball. It's pretty amazing that the DNA of the orange basketball we see today is rooted in the soccer ball.
